Creating a Google Meeting

Creating a Google Meeting

Google meetings can be created from Gmail, Google Calendar, or Canvas.

From Gmail

Within Gmail, there is the "Start a Meeting" button on the left-hand side. Clicking that option will open up a Google Meeting in a new window. Side note: Each user will have to allow Google Meet to use their Microphone and Camera the first time they try to enter a meeting.

Once you have joined the Google meeting, the "Add Others" window will appear giving you the option to copy the meeting information as well as the option to add people directly via their Gmail address. After closing out of this window, the joining info can be found and copied by clicking "Meeting details" at the lower-left-hand corner.

From Google Calendar

When in Google Calendar, you can create a Google Calendar event by clicking the "Create" button or clicking on a blank time on your calendar which will open up a new window to customize the details of the event.

Within the event customization window, there is the option to "Add Google Meet video conferencing" which will create and attach a Google Meeting code to the calendar event. There is also an "Add guests" button which will allow you to invite people from your Gmail contacts. Doing so will automatically send them an email with the meeting details and Google Meeting code.

From Canvas

A Google Meeting can be created in Canvas whenever the Rich Content Editor is used. This includes quizzes, modules, announcements, Canvas Calendar events, etc. Among the various functions within the Rich Content Editor, there is a small blue "V" in between the "Dropbox" and "Youtube" options. Clicking the "V" will open up a dropdown menu which will have a "Google Hangouts Meet" option near the bottom. Clicking that option will bring up a short loading window, open and automatically close a separate fully black browser tab, and then bring up another loading window. Once all of this has finished (which should only take a few seconds) a Google Meeting link will be pasted into the rich content editor. This link is permanent and so can be used for multiple separate meetings if desired.

Caveat: Upon clicking the "Google Hangout's Meet" option for the first time you will be provided with a number of windows walking you through the process of logging into your nnu.edu Gmail account and authorizing Canvas to create Google Meetings on your behalf.
