Overview

What to Expect

Our consultants are trained and experienced in a variety of tutorial methods and may employ any of those methods in a consultation session. Do not expect the Consultant to "edit" or "fix" your paper. It is your paper. Rather, the Consultant will provide feedback from the reader's point of view. He or she may ask a variety of clarifying questions and respond to impressions of the text. He or she may provide tips or recommendations, all of which are your responsibility to implement or ignore. With writing there is no "right answer" and the Consultant's feedback may or may not help you meet the expectations of your instructor.

Your Consultant may notice the composition is not ready for all necessary feedback in a single setting. In order to prevent feedback fatigue, he or she will provide the most pressing feedback on higher-order issues in the current session and may ask you to revise and return for another appointment at a later time. In subsequent settings you might receive more feedback regarding grammar or other lower-order issues.

Meeting with a Consultant will not guarantee a student will receive a good grade on their paper. Helping students get "A's" on papers is not our purpose. Additionally, Writing Consultants do not know the content about which you are writing. You are the master of the content. What we provide is a layer of feedback in a comfortable, non-judgmental setting that can help the writer know if their rhetorical purposes are being met and if their writing is clear.

In-person appointments will occur in the Leah Peterson Learning Commons in room 133. If an online appointment has been booked, the Consultant will send an appointment link prior to the scheduled time.
