Graduate Writing Lab

The Graduate Writing Lab is designed to help NNU's graduate students across all programs. We will assist with a variety of skills, from English writing proficiency to paper, thesis, or dissertation drafts. Our graduate peer-tutors and experienced faculty are here to help with any writing needs, and we look forward to helping you grow as a writer. Please familiarize yourself with our policies and resources to identify how we can best meet your needs.

Online Paper Uploads:

We now offer an online writing lab specifically for graduate students. Our online lab provides a simple way for students to receive feedback on papers.

Guidelines

Papers may be submitted to the graduate writing lab. Papers of 10 or fewer pages will be processed within 48 business hours of submission. For papers longer than 10 pages, please allow 24 additional hours.  Please do not submit papers longer than 25 pages to Canvas. Instead, reach out to us at writingcenter@nnu.edu and let us know you'd like feedback on a longer project. We will let you know a timeline for feedback based on our capacity.

**The Online Writing Lab is not an editing and proofreading service. Our primary focus is to serve as writing coaches in order to help you improve in all facets of writing.

Theses, Dissertations, and Longer Projects:

The graduate writing center offers writing assistance for longer projects as well. We can work with students from the nascent stages of their projects to the final submissions. We ask that students interested in working through their long projects e-mail us directly at writingcenter@nnu.edu so we can work together and determine the best approach for each student.

Overview

What to Expect

Our consultants are trained and experienced in a variety of tutorial methods and may employ any of those methods in a consultation session. Do not expect the Consultant to "edit" or "fix" your paper. It is your paper. Rather, the Consultant will provide feedback from the reader's point of view. He or she may ask a variety of clarifying questions and respond to impressions of the text. He or she may provide tips or recommendations, all of which are your responsibility to implement or ignore. With writing there is no "right answer" and the Consultant's feedback may or may not help you meet the expectations of your instructor.

Your Consultant may notice the composition is not ready for all necessary feedback in a single setting. In order to prevent feedback fatigue, he or she will provide the most pressing feedback on higher-order issues in the current session and may ask you to revise and return for another appointment at a later time. In subsequent settings you might receive more feedback regarding grammar or other lower-order issues.

Meeting with a Consultant will not guarantee a student will receive a good grade on their paper. Helping students get "A's" on papers is not our purpose. Additionally, Writing Consultants do not know the content about which you are writing. You are the master of the content. What we provide is a layer of feedback in a comfortable, non-judgmental setting that can help the writer know if their rhetorical purposes are being met and if their writing is clear.

In-person appointments will occur in the Leah Peterson Learning Commons in room 133. If an online appointment has been booked, the Consultant will send an appointment link prior to the scheduled time.
