In addition to regular and substantive interaction, Title IV regulations require institutions to keep track of the last date of participation for students who receive an "F" grade in an online course. Additionally, the institution's financial aid office must collect the last date of participation for students who drop or withdrawal from an online course to calculate if Title IV funds need to be reimbursed or returned.
A student's participation includes the submission of an assignment, quiz, exam, or paper or posting to a discussion board. It is not the last date the student logged into the course or Canvas.
When instructors turn in grades in the NNU Portal and enter an "F" for a student, they will be prompted to enter the last date of attendance. For online courses, this is the last date the student participated or turned in an assignment in a class.
Drop/Withdrawals
NNU's regular procedures for dropping a class or withdrawing from the semester include the last date of participation. In most cases, the program coordinator locates the last date of participation within Canvas for the registrar's office paperwork. If there is a dispute, financial aid staff may contact the instructor to confirm the date. Instructors may also contact the Center for Instructional Design to help them confirm the last date of participation of a student.
