Chicago and Turabian -- What's the Difference?

According to CMOS Shop Talk, Chicago and Turabian are very similar, but they have different target audiences.

  • Kate Turabian's Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations (Turabian manual, for short) is designed for students who are submitting papers for class, not a professional publication.

The manual is a scaled-down version of the Chicago Manual of Style (Turabian: 462 pages. Chicago: 1144 pages).

  • The Chicago Manual of Style: The Essential Guide for Writers, Editors, and Publishers (Chicago manual, for short) is designed for publishers and scholars who submit their work for publication.
